Staying in a family home rather than going to an assisted living facility or retirement community is the preference for many seniors. However, this decision can also be stressful and difficult for the adult children of these individuals.

No two situations are the same, making the decision to stay at home or make the transition to a retirement home a difficult one. There are pros and cons to both options.

Here we take a look at the reasons why your family members deserve to stay in the home they love as they age:

Comfort

There’s no place like home. After spending years in the family home, seldom do people want to give it up. There are countless great family memories – it’s the place where your family grew up and it’s a place a lot of time, effort, and hard work was put into to make it what it is today.

There is a certain comfort level that cannot be matched by retirement homes, or anyplace else for that matter. Not surprisingly, most people just want to be comfortable, especially when dealing with heath issues.

Familiarity

The family home is a familiar place. Your loved ones know where everything is, they know how to get around the house and they are familiar with the neighborhood. Many people have gotten to know the people in the neighborhood well, and have favorite spots close to home to get a coffee, do their shopping, and go for a walk.

Independence

Seniors and those with healthcare issues have a sense of pride in being able to do things for themselves. They want to do things on their own and remain independent as long as they can. Don’t you?

Staying at home allows them to remain independent, even if this means making alterations to the family home or having a health care provider make house calls. Older adults want to visit the local businesses and parks in their neighborhood. They want to meet with other seniors they’ve developed relationships with over the years.

They are financially sound

People work hard and save their money all their lives so they can live their retirement year’s comfortably in peace. Many save money specifically so they can stay in the family home and remain independent. They can afford it because they choose to do so. If they have the financial means, it is difficult to argue with their decision to stay.

They want to stay

Older adults want to stay in their home for as long as they can – plain and simple. They have an attachment to their home and they want a say in how they live on a daily basis.

Think about both sides when weighing the pros and cons of having your family members live at home or an assisted care facility.
